Moisture Issues

The following publications and papers deal with moisture and water management issues in homes and buildings:

  • Understanding Vapor Barriers
2005, Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng. The function of a vapor barrier is to retard the migration of water vapor. Vapor barriers are not typically intended to retard the migration of air. That is the function of air barriers.

  • Investigating and Diagnosing Moisture Problems
by Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., Member ASHRAE, ASHRAE Journal.

  • Moisture Control for Buildings
by Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., Member ASHRAE, ASHRAE Journal.
  • Moisture Control Handbook Errata
June 2002, Joe Lstiburek. The Moisture Control Handbook was published in 1993 and written between 1990 and 1992. In the past decade several things have become obvious to me that are not reflected adequately in the Handbook.
  • Relative Humidity
April 2002, Joseph Lstiburek. Healthy Indoor Environments Conference. Dr. Lstiburek discusses the ideal humidity levels to maintain in the house, based on comfort and health concerns, effects on the building enclosure, mold growth, dust mites, and wood shrinkage.
  • Water Management
2001, Joseph Lstiburek. This is a concise overview of the principles and steps to follow when dealing with water from the foundation to the roof.
